Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary, spread over 53 sq.km on the western ghats is rich in flora and fauna. Peppara dotted with hillocks, foreats and eucalyptus plantations is a great attraction for wildlife enthusiasts.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary

Sprawled across 285 sq. km, this sanctuary is home to rare wild animals. Boating/Cruising facilities are available at the Parambikkulam Reservoir.

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary

Located on the banks of Vembanad lake, this sanctuary an ornithologist paradise, is a favorite haunt of migratory birds like the Siberian stork, egret, darter, heron and teal. Common varieties like the woodpecker, shylark, crane, water hen and parrots can also be spotted here. Acruise along the Vembanad lake is the best way to experience the sanctuary.

Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary

The estuary at Kadalundi is a heaven for migratory birds. Terns, gulls, herons, sandpipers, whimbrels and other exotic birds flock into this place in November and return home in April.

The Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary

This sanctuary spreads over77 sq. km and is about 450-748 m above sea level. Animals – Elephants, Bisom, Sambar deer, wild dog, jungle cat, tiger, wild boar, etc.

Snakes : Cobra, Viper, krait and a number of non poisonous snakes

Birds : Jungle fowl, myna, laughing thrush, black bulbul, peafowl, woodpecker, kingfisher etc.

The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary

Lying close to the plantations, in the rich jungles of periyar in Thekkady, is one of the worlds most fascinating natural wildlife reserves – The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. Spread across 777 sq. km of which 360 sq. km is thick evergreen forest, the periyar wildlife sanctuary was declared a Tiger reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar dam across the Periyar river adds to the charm of the park. This is the only sanctuary in India where you can have the unique experience of viewing wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat on the lake. The greatest attraction of Periyar, however, are the herds of wild elephants that come down to play in the lake.

Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated on the Tamilnadu border, this sanctuary is spread across 90.44 sq. kms.

Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary

Tattekkad Bird Sanctuary

This sanctuary, nestled in the evergreen forests was discovered by the renowned ornithologist of India Dr. Salim Ali and is named after him. This sanctuary is notable for indigenous birds like the Malabar grey hornbill, the woodpecker, rose-ringed and blue-ringed parakeet etc. Rare birds like the Ceylon frog-moth and the rose-billed roller are also seen here.
